Since 1975, Morocco has undermined all efforts to achieve a just resolution of the Western Sahara conflict, including by upending the substantial efforts of former US Secretary of State James Baker to create the conditions for a Sahrawi referendum on self-governance in the post-colonial period.
In the aftermath of Spanish occupation, Morocco refused to consider the right of the Sahrawi people to national self-determination, instead treating the Western Sahara as a semi-autonomous province of the Kingdom of Morocco and populating the area with citizens of Morocco.
As a result Western Sahara is the only African nation under occupation AND remains the only African nation never to achieve decolonization.
The struggle continues . . .
Who We Are
Our Campaign is a diverse coalition of organizations and individuals committed to international justice and respect for national self-determination.
We represent a wide spectrum of political views and religious affiliations and have joined together to urge the U.S. government to shift its role in the region and to expedite efforts to secure Sahrawi national sovereignty.
We seek:
The withdrawal of Morocco from Western Sahara
A transition of authority to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, in accordance with the Charter of the African Union
An expeditious return of Sahrawi refugees and Sahrawi diaspora to their homeland; and,
An end to any U.S. assistance to Morocco that could be used to advance a claim to the Western Sahara and/or harm the Sahrawi people.
Three generations of Sahrawi people have been displaced from their homeland.
With your actions, they will regain the opportunity to reclaim what is rightfully theirs.
